Project Workflow

The omniverse project workflow introduces a specialized workflow for AEC customers allowing them to easily gain the benefits of a non destructive, collaborative, and USD compliant setup without the need for understanding or managing USD layers. By implementing an additional and automated (.project) layer, organizing folder structure, and automatic population of these folders, Omniverse AEC tools take all the guesswork out of USD Layers.

The Project Workflow Delivers

  • Allow for easy multi-user collaboration from multiple AEC connector applications, for example Revit and Rhino.

  • Non destructive workflow. Allow VIEW users to easily add deltas and their own content without losing any work from the connectors.

  • Allow for easy versioning

  • Allow for safe reconnecting of USD files

AEC Project Structure

An AEC Project consists of a Root Project Layer USD File : my_cool_example.project.usd Upon creation of the project, a series of folders will also be produced.

Where Can I create a New Project from?

A new AEC project can be created from any AEC App or Connector. Simply locate the “New Project” menu item and the process begins.

How to Work in a Project

Working in a Project is no different than working regularly with layers. For AEC professionals we have just simplified the process by automatically generating and inserting the layers into your project for you. This opens up some very useful features without any extra effort. There are some things to know however.

  1. The .project.usd file at the root of your project is used for viewing and editing the project as a whole however this file should only be edited in Omniverse View. If adhered to correctly, this will allow non-destructive edits and changes to this file.

  2. Published files from connectors will appear in Project Files folder. Once published, they can be edited by the host connector and their changes will appear in the .project.usd file automatically.

  3. Any number of users with any number of connectors can connect to the project at the same time. They should however make their edits to their respective project file (ie: Project Folder > Project Files > Example > Example.3dsmax.usd)

Note

It is ok to add folders to a project, but use caution if renaming or altering this structure as it has a high potential for breaking a project.

Where Can I create a New Project?

Currently, AEC Projects can be only be created from View and Omniverse 3ds Max Connector. However all AEC Connectors can contribute to existing projects.
