Overview#
omni.kit.converter.dgn_core converts DGN files to USD using the ODA Kernel and Drawings SDKs. This is a core extension without a GUI that provides the fundamental DGN conversion functionality. It can be used directly through its Python API, or accessed through the GUI extension omni.kit.converter.dgn which provides a user interface for the conversion process.
Upon loading, it registers with the CAD Converter service (omni.services.convert.cad) if available, allowing other extensions to utilize its conversion capabilities.
The resulting USD file from the DGN Converter prepends names of DGN levels to prims. This allows for quick search by users to find geometry belonging to desired converted levels.
Model units#
A DGN file can contain models that use different units, such as millimeters and meters. The converter scales each selected model to preserve its physical size and placement. The first selected model with valid units determines the USD stage units. If no valid model units are available, the converter uses centimeters and records a warning.
Conversion results#
The extension returns (output_url, ConverterStatus). ConverterStatus.error_code is the overall conversion status: 0 for success, 1 for backend failure, and 2 for usable but incomplete output. Extension failures, such as post-processing or file-transfer errors, use -1. Treat both 0 and 2 as usable output, and review the message when it is nonempty.
ConverterStatus.error_msg includes the backend’s formatted failure, errors, and warnings, with their issue codes and subjects. An incomplete result also gets this summary from the extension: “Conversion completed with incomplete output. Some content may be missing or changed. Review the conversion logs for details. If more detail is needed, enable the converter option verboseLogging and rerun the conversion.” Warnings alone leave the status at 0. Issue codes identify individual problems; they are separate from the overall status. The backend’s legacy tuple interface can still return (2, ""); this extension reads its structured result instead.
Incomplete output can mean that some geometry could not be extracted, including an element that produces no tessellation faces. Review the converted scene and logs before using it. Success does not guarantee that every source element was supported or reproduced exactly; some diagnostics remain log-only.
For the complete backend status contract, see Conversion results. For issue codes, their meanings, and subject identities, see Conversion issues. When a diagnostic identifies an affected DGN element, inspect that element in the native CAD application and determine whether it needs changes there. The diagnostic describes the conversion problem; it does not necessarily establish its cause or a specific repair. See Investigate a reported element issue.
Invalid filter patterns#
Malformed wildcard patterns are dropped with warnings. Remaining valid patterns are used. If all modelNamePatterns entries are dropped, the empty list selects all models. If both levelIncludes and levelExcludes are empty after normalization, level filtering is disabled. This can produce more content than intended, so review warnings and correct the patterns before retrying a narrow selection. Valid patterns that match nothing are not malformed and are not replaced by an all-models selection.
These warnings appear in the extension’s result message and conversion logs. The GUI displays them as notifications; the CAD service includes them in its response comment and job history.
Importer UI text fields#
The omni.kit.converter.dgn importer Advanced Parameters panel exposes some options as single-line text. How you type them differs by field:
Level Includes, Hidden Levels, Level Excludes, and Model Name Patterns are lists of string patterns. You may enter comma-separated plain text (for example
Default, layer_*) or paste a JSON array of strings in the same shape as in a converter config file (for example["Default", "layer_*"]). Only JSON string elements are split into separate patterns; arrays that contain numbers, booleans, or nested objects are not interpreted as multiple patterns (the pasted text is kept as a single entry).Attributes must be valid JSON: a JSON array of objects with
name,converted_name, and optionalprefix, as documented under Converter Option: Attributes below. Comma-separated plain text is not supported for this field.
Supported DGN Element Types#
Container Types#
The element types below are converted to UsdGeomXform prims.
Cell Header (3D) - OdDgCellHeader3d
Cell Header (2D) - OdDgCellHeader2d
Shared Cell Reference - OdDgSharedCellReference
Shared Cell Definition - OdDgSharedCellDefinition
2D cell headers apply their origin and transformation so nested 2D layout geometry keeps its placement in the converted USD stage.
Mesh Types#
The element types below are converted to UsdGeomMesh prims.
Complex Shape (3D) - OdDgComplexShape
Shape (3D) - OdDgShape3d
Solid - OdDgSolid
Surface - OdDgSurface
Mesh - OdDgMesh
Cone - OdDgCone
BSpline Surface - OdDgBSplineSurface
Curve Types#
The element types below are converted to UsdGeomBasisCurves prims when Curve Conversion Style is set to Renderable (2).
Line - OdDgLine3d
Line String - OdDgLineString3d
Ellipse - OdDgEllipse3d
Arc - OdDgArc3d
BSpline Curve - OdDgBSplineCurve3d
Shape (2D) - OdDgShape2d
Complex Shape (2D) - OdDgComplexShape
2D layout curve output#
Set curveConversionStyle to Renderable (2) to author supported DGN 2D curve data as UsdGeomBasisCurves. Supported 2D data includes lines, line strings, shapes, complex shapes, B-spline curves, generic sampled curve elements, and exploded text outlines.
OdDgComplexShape elements keep their existing mesh-first behavior when curveConversionStyle is None (0, the default): they are authored as meshes whenever meshConversionStyle is enabled. When curveConversionStyle is Renderable, the converter instead authors their ODA complex-curve boundary as USD curve data so 2D layout drawings do not disappear when tessellation produces no mesh faces.
DGN CONVERTER CONFIG FILE INPUTS:#
Conversion options are configured by supplying a JSON file. Below are the available configuration options.
NOTE: instancing, useMaterials, hideLevelsByList, and importAttributesByList are deprecated in release 514.0.0. They remain supported during this deprecation period and produce migration warnings. Use instancingStyle, materialType, hiddenLevels, and attributes instead.
JSON Converter Settings:#
Format: Each option is specified as a JSON key-value pair, e.g. "option_name": default_value
Converter Option: Max Grid Lines#
Description: The maximum number of grid lines.
Default Value: 10000
Data Format: integer

Description: The maximum facet edge length.
Default Value: 0.0
Data Format: double
Config File Example:
"maxFacetEdgeLength" : 0.0
Converter Option: Normal To Tolerance#
Description: NormalTolerance allows to specify the tessellation quality of circular surfaces (such as Cone, Torus, Sphere or Cylinder). It is measured in degrees. The value of this parameter determines the quantity of mesh cells (triangles) used to represent a circular surface (360/NormalTolerance). Default value is 15. It means, for an example, that surface will be tessellated with 24 mesh cells (triangles) in circular direction.
Default Value: 15.0

Default Value: 0.0
Data Format: double
Config File Example:
"gridAspectRatio" : 0.0
Converter Option: Between Knots#
Description: Distance between knots. This parameter contains the number of additional points between knots; for NURB surfaces it contains number of additional isolines between knots.
Default Value: 2
Data Format: integer
Config File Example:
"betweenKnots" : 2
Converter Option: Points Per Edge#

Default Value: 0
Data Format: integer
Config File Example:
"pointsPerEdge" : 0
Converter Option: Surface Tolerance#
Description: Sets the maximum distance (surface tolerance) between the tessellated mesh and the source surface. The smaller the value the more precise the tessellated mesh. Positive values are physical distances interpreted using surfaceToleranceUnit. For a negative value, ODA multiplies the object’s extents diagonal by the value’s absolute magnitude; for example, -0.01 uses 1% of the diagonal. A value of 0.0 uses 2.5% of the diagonal. The legacy key for this option is dSurfaceTolerance.
Default Value: 0.02 scene units (with the default surfaceToleranceUnit of 0.0)
Value Ranges: Any double. Zero and negative values select bounds-relative tolerance.
Data Format: double
Config File Example:
"surfaceTolerance" : 0.02
NOTE: Removed internal limits on the surfaceTolerance option, allowing users to specify the full range supported by ODA. The iTessLOD converter option was deprecated to avoid conflicts and enable unlimited tolerance values.
Converter Option: Surface Tolerance Unit#
Description: Sets the unit used to interpret a positive surfaceTolerance, expressed as meters per unit. Use 0.0 to interpret the tolerance directly in scene units, 1.0 for meters, or 0.001 for millimeters. This option is ignored when surfaceTolerance is zero or negative.
Default Value: 0.0 (scene units)
Value Ranges: Greater or equal to 0.0
Data Format: double
Config File Example:
"surfaceToleranceUnit" : 0.0
Converter Option: Use Materials (Deprecated)#
Description: Controls whether the converter creates explicit materials. Use materialType instead. Set materialType to 0 to disable explicit materials.
Default Value: true
Value Ranges: true, false
Data Format: bool
Config File Example:
"useMaterials" : true
Converter Option: Material Select#
Description: Sets the material type for the target renderer. The eNone value disables explicit materials, authors display-color primvars, and binds a root DefaultDisplayColorMaterial.
Default Value: 1
Value Ranges: [0, 3]
0: Does not create explicit materials. Authors display-color and opacity primvars and binds a root
DefaultDisplayColorMaterial.1: USD Preview Surface; default and compatible with Universal renderers
2: OmniPBR + USD Preview Surface; compatible with RTX and Universal renderers
3: OpenPBR MaterialX + USD Preview Surface fallback; compatible with MaterialX-aware renderers.
Data Format: integer
Config File Example:
"materialType" : 1
The converter reads supported DGN material colors, opacity, gloss, and file textures. It supports color, normal, opacity, and emissive textures.
For file output, the converter copies referenced images into a Textures directory beside the USD file. It authors relative asset paths and preserves existing files. A filename collision receives a numeric suffix.
Set materialType to 0 to disable source material and texture conversion. Disabling convertTextureCoordinates omits mesh UVs but retains material and image references.
Converter Option: Geometry Attribute Style#
Description: The style in how the DGN geometry attributes get authoered to USD
Default Value: 1
Value Ranges: [0, 2]
0: None; Don’t author attributes
1: Attribute; Default option, author as a custom attribute
2: Primvar; Author as a constant primvar
Data Format: integer
Config File Example:
"geometryAttributeStyle": 1
Converter Option: Generate UVs#
Description: If true, calls Scene Optimizer Service Kit extension to generate UVs if missing in source data. The legacy key for this option is bOptimize.
Behaviour change: Previously this option defaulted to true (as bOptimize). It now defaults to false to avoid USD scene bloat from unused UVs, so new conversions with default parameters do not run UV generation. Set sceneOpGenerateUVs to true when UVs are required.
See Scene Optimizer Service documentation for details.
Default Value: false
Value Ranges: true, false
Data Format: bool
Config File Example:
"sceneOpGenerateUVs" : false
Converter Option: Instancing (Deprecated)#
Description: Controls USD Reference instancing. Use instancingStyle instead. instancingStyle takes precedence when both options are supplied.
Default Value: true
Value Ranges: true, false
Data Format: bool
Config File Example:
"instancing" : true
Converter Option: Instancing Style#
Description: Style of instancing to use in USD when handling Shared Cell References. Shared cells normally reuse one geometry and material prototype. If an occurrence has a different material, the converter retains its geometry reference but disables instancing only for that occurrence. This preserves its appearance and can increase memory use. See Scenegraph Instancing documentation for more details.
Default Value: 1
Value Ranges: [0, 1] 0: No instancing 1: Scenegraph Instancing is enabled

If the user provides “*”, then all non-Default levels are included. If patterns do not match any non-Default levels, conversion still proceeds when Default-level geometry is present; otherwise there may be no filtered levels to convert. Geometry on the DGN Default level is always converted when level filtering is enabled (see Level Filter Style). Searches are case sensitive (i.e., if a level is named “Structural” but a pattern “structural” is provided, then there is no match for that named pattern).

Troubleshooting DGN Read Errors#
The DGN Converter reports read failures with converter-owned issue codes and customer-facing messages, including the input file as the subject. These issue codes are not raw ODA result numbers. Consult the diagnostic message and logs to distinguish invalid files, unsupported versions, access problems, and other read failures.
For an unexpected end-of-file condition, check that the transfer finished and that the original application can open the file; recopy or re-export it if necessary. For access or encryption problems, verify permissions and whether an unprotected export is available. These are troubleshooting steps, not proof that a particular cause has been established.
Enable verboseLogging when collecting additional development diagnostics. Raw ODA details may appear in development logs; do not interpret the public converter issue code as an OdResult value. The CAD service returns fatal diagnostics in the HTTP error response’s detail field, and nonfatal diagnostics in a successful response’s comment field.

Textures and Nucleus output#
For local output, supported texture images are copied into Textures/ beside the USD. For Nucleus output, the extension transfers textures and referenced USD files into a separate asset folder beside the requested USD and updates its references. Keep that asset folder with the root USD when moving the output.
Usable incomplete output (status 2) is transferred along with its dependencies. A transfer failure is reported as a conversion failure. The root USD is uploaded only after its dependencies have copied successfully. Each conversion uses a separate asset folder; assets from earlier exports are not automatically removed when replacing the root USD.
